Wild Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout River Fishery
This excellent salmon and trout fishery is situated in the beautiful Roe Valley
Country Park near Limavady. A footbridge spans the river upstream of Givan’s Weir giving angler’s easy
access to stretches of both banks. Forest walks are provided but access to the river can be difficult,
particularly the stretch that flows through a steep gorge. This is one of the Department’s most spectacular
fisheries. It is a productive fishery supporting good sea trout to 3 kg, with a good grilse run and
salmon to 7 kg. A spate river it fishes best on a falling flood from June to October. Bright patterns
and purple dressings work well on the Roe. Night time sea trout fishing is popular in the lower reaches.
How to get there
The river below O’Cahan’s Rock is best fished from the left or northern bank. This
is approached from the A2 just west of Limavady by the B69 south to Claudy, turning left after 1.2 km
onto the B192 to Dungiven. The road to the river is 1.2 km further on the left (signposted). The Dogleap
area is best approached from the B68 Limavady-Dungiven road and is well signposted.
