Wild Brown Trout Fishery
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure leases the fishing rights of the river from Downpatrick to Kilmore shown by a yellow line on the map. Fishing is from the left (Eastern) bank from Kilmore to just downstream of Annacloy and from here to Downpatrick on both banks. Good trout fishing is available in the river downstream from Kilmore. The river stretches are not suitable for disabled anglers. The lower stretches on the River Quoile have disabled facilities.
The fishing rights of the Quoile Basin downstream from the old barrier (flood gates) at Quoile Bridge to the new barrier at the head of Strangford Lough are owned by the Department. This stretch is slow moving and is mainly asssociated with pike, perch and rudd fishing. However brown trout and sea trout are occassionally taken. Access to the water is easy on the south side where the road runs near the water. A path and some stands have been provided and a disabled anglers’ car-park is now available at the old flood gates.
Please note from Steamboat Quay to the Quoile Barrier, fishing is not Permitted, within this location as it is part of N.I E.A Byelaws for the protection of all wildlife. This is a National Nature Reserve, managed by the Environment Service of the Department of the Environment, and anglers are requested to be careful to cause as little disturbance as possible to wildlife and to take care not to leave pieces of line, lead shot or other litter.
Access points are marked on the map.
